Technical Procurement: Six Questions Before Supply | PSC
The PSC Approach · Technical Procurement

Technical Procurement
Understanding Before Supplying.

Technical procurement begins before a quotation is prepared. Whether an enquiry arrives with a complete specification, an obsolete part number, a damaged sample or only a description of what failed, the equipment, application, operating conditions and documentation requirements must be understood before a product is recommended.

Technical Procurement Explained

What Is Technical Procurement?

Technical procurement is the process of verifying an industrial requirement against the equipment, component function, operating conditions, manufacturer history, available alternatives, certification and documentation before a purchase or supply recommendation is made.

It connects PSC's wider industrial procurement lessons with its system-based approach to industrial equipment sourcing . The objective is not simply to locate a matching product, but to reduce uncertainty and confirm that the proposed component is suitable for the application and usable with the required technical records.

The Technical Procurement Process

Six Technical Procurement Questions
Before Every Solution.

Before identifying or recommending a product, PSC examines the technical context around the enquiry. These six questions have guided the company's technical procurement approach to industrial requirements since 2000.

01

What equipment is involved?

The system context determines the specification — not the other way around. A component cannot be correctly selected without understanding the equipment it serves and the position it occupies within that equipment.

02

What function does the component perform?

Position in the system defines the selection criteria. A bearing in a high-speed rolling mill stand has fundamentally different requirements from a bearing in a bilge pump — even if the dimensions appear identical.

03

Has the manufacturer changed?

Ownership changes, product line consolidations and superseded part numbers are common in every industrial category. Sourcing from the wrong manufacturer can produce a dimensionally correct component that fails in service. Verification is not optional.

04

Does a technically suitable alternative exist?

When the OEM part is unavailable, discontinued or on extended lead time, a qualified alternative may be appropriate. This requires understanding the application well enough to confirm suitability — not simply finding something with matching dimensions.

05

What operating conditions influence selection?

Temperature, pressure, fluid type, area classification, and certification requirements all affect which product is correct for a given application. The same product category can have multiple variants — selecting without understanding the conditions produces avoidable failures.

06

What documentation will be required?

Offshore, pharmaceutical and regulated manufacturing environments require traceability that begins with the manufacturer, not the distributor. A technically correct product supplied without the right documentation is frequently unusable. Documentation is part of the product.

What Technical Procurement Means For You

Bring us the
incomplete enquiry.

The six questions above are not a checklist PSC places on the customer. They are the internal technical procurement discipline applied before any recommendation is made.

This means customers can come to PSC with incomplete information and receive a complete, verified answer — rather than being turned away until their specification is perfect.

Obsolete part numbers
Traced to current equivalents through manufacturer knowledge and technical manuals — not guesswork.
Incomplete specifications
Completed by understanding the application rather than asking the customer to do work we can do for them.
Discontinued products
Resolved through qualified alternative identification — with the engineering rationale explained, not assumed.
Urgent requirements
Sourced globally through 30+ countries. The understanding happens first; the logistics follow immediately.
Documentation requirements
Coordinated from the manufacturer outward. Mill certificates, CoC, test reports — understood before the order is placed.
The Objective · Project Sales Corp

The objective has never been simply to sell products. The objective has always been to reduce uncertainty.
